Certification Updates in 2025: What You Need to Know

We have almost made it through the first quarter of the year, so what is upcoming in the certification landscape? Whether you are a beginning tech or one who is seeking upskills to advance your career, you need to know what is changing in tech.  No doubt this year, AI will have a huge impact on many certification authorities.

I have recently been asked, what should I know about certification changes?  So here are some basics.  High value certification authorities update certifications about every three years, and these certifications generally require that you recertify for complete continuing education after three years.

Vendor specific certifications (AWS, Microsoft, etc) may have changes more often as the technology changes more often.  The certification changes tend to be smaller, but more often.

CompTIA, ISC2, ISACA, and EC-Council are introducing significant updates to some of their certifications in 2025. These changes reflect the industry’s commitment to staying ahead of technological advancements and preparing professionals for the challenges of tomorrow. CompTIA is updating its flagship A+ certification to version 220-1201/1202. This new version emphasizes cybersecurity, emerging technologies like AI and IoT, and performance-based skills. The updated certification will be available in March 2025, with the older version retiring later in the year. Additionally, CompTIA is introducing a new certification, CloudNetX (CNX-001), focusing on secure and scalable networking solutions for hybrid environments.

ISC2 is refreshing several certifications to address the evolving cybersecurity landscape. The Certified Secure Software Lifecycle Professional (CSSLP) will include updated domains such as Secure Software Concepts and Supply Chain Security. Similarly, the Certified in Cybersecurity (CC) exam will emphasize Security Principles, Network Security, and Incident Response. These updates aim to equip professionals with the skills needed to tackle modern cybersecurity challenges.

ISACA is introducing updates to its CRISC (Certified in Risk and Information Systems Control) certification, with revised job practice areas focusing on IT Risk Assessment and Information Technology and Security. Additionally, ISACA is launching a new certification, Certified Cybersecurity Operations Analyst (CCOA), which emphasizes hands-on, performance-based learning for cybersecurity analysts.

EC-Council is making significant updates to its certifications to address emerging threats. The Certified Ethical Hacker (CEH) will now include modules on AI-driven cyber threats and cloud security. Meanwhile, the Certified Cybersecurity Technician (CCT) is being enhanced with more hands-on labs and practical scenarios to better prepare candidates for real-world cybersecurity roles.

Updates from CompTIA, ISC2, ISACA, and EC-Council highlight the dynamic nature of the IT industry and the need for professionals to stay current with their skills. Whether you’re an aspiring IT professional or a seasoned expert, these changes present an opportunity to enhance your expertise and remain competitive in the tech landscape.
