Choosing A Certification Path: Align Your Career Goals With the Right Starting Point

If you’ve been exploring tech careers and certifications this month, you’ve probably realized something: there are a lot of options. Tech+, A+, Network+, Security+, and the multitude of Cloud certs. And while it’s exciting to have choices, it can also feel overwhelming when you’re trying to figure out where to begin.

Your first certification doesn’t lock you into a lifelong path, but it does shape your early momentum. It influences the skills you build, the jobs you qualify for, and even how confident you feel as you move forward. Choosing the right starting point is worth a little thought. Let’s walk through how to make that choice in a way that feels intentional rather than random.

Start by thinking about the direction you want to go
You don’t need a perfect long term plan. You just need a general sense of what kind of work sounds interesting. Once you know the direction that feels right, matching a certification becomes much easier. Most entry level tech roles fall into a few broad categories:
• IT support and help desk roles are great if you like solving problems and helping people.
• Networking roles are a good fit if you’re curious about how systems connect and communicate.
• Cybersecurity roles appeal to people who enjoy puzzles, investigations, and protecting systems.
• Cloud and DevOps roles attract those who like automation, modern infrastructure, and big picture systems thinking.

Think about where you’re starting from
Your background plays a big role in how smooth your first certification experience. Be realistic about knowing where your skills are now, you don’t want to set yourself up for failure by working on a certification your don’t have the foundational skills to achieve…YET! There’s no shame in starting with the basics. In fact, it often makes the rest of your journey faster.
• If you’re brand new to tech, Tech+ or A+ gives you a solid foundation. If you’ve already been working in IT support, specialization helps you grow (Network+, Security+, Cloud certifications).
• If you’re transitioning careers, starting with fundamentals gives you a base foundation.

Consider how you learn best
Different certifications lean into different learning styles. Matching your learning style to the certification can make studying feel a lot less like a chore.
• Tech+ is a good fit if you want a broad, modern foundation without going too deep.
• A+ is great if you like hands on troubleshooting and practical scenarios.
• Network+ works well if you’re a visual thinker who likes diagrams and systems.
• Cloud certifications are ideal if you’re drawn to big picture infrastructure and enjoy understanding how modern applications run behind the scenes.

Think about your timeline
Your timeline doesn’t have to be rigid. It just helps you choose the certification that aligns with your goals for the year.

• If you want to get into a job quickly, A+ or Tech+ tends to be the fastest route.
• If you’re aiming for a more specialized path, Network+, Security+, or Cloud certifications might be the better investment.

What comes next
In February, we’re going to dig into the most common starting point questions and help you decide which one fits your goals. We’ll also look at network basics and talk about how to get hands on practice. This is the moment when your planning starts turning into action. You’ve explored the landscape, now you’re choosing your path.
