CompTIA Security+ SY0-801 Is Coming

Security+ SY0-801 Is Coming: What Changes, What Stays, and Which Exam to Take

The short version: CompTIA Security+ SY0-801 launches in November, and SY0-701 remains available for about six months afterward so current candidates can finish their studies. The core fundamentals carry forward, so the right version comes down to your study timeline.

CompTIA Security+ is changing versions. SY0-801 launches in November, and if you are studying for Security+ right now, or thinking about starting, the change raises fair questions. Do you keep going with SY0-701? Do you wait? Does anything you have learned so far still count? Here is what the transition means and how to plan around it.

What Is Changing

Every CompTIA certification gets revised on a regular cycle to keep pace with how the industry works, and Security+ is no exception. SY0-801 updates the exam objectives to reflect current threats and current defensive practice. The full objective-by-objective picture will become clearer as the new material rolls out, but the pattern is familiar from past revisions: some topics get more emphasis, and material that no longer reflects daily practice gets trimmed. Revisions also tend to update the wording of the objectives themselves, so a term or tool you know from SY0-701 may be grouped differently or described with newer language. That is one more reason to study from material written to the version you plan to sit.

SY0-701 Stays Available for About Six Months

The most important detail for current candidates is the overlap. SY0-701 will remain available for about six months after SY0-801 launches. That window exists so people already deep into their studies can finish what they started without switching versions halfway through.

If you are partway through SY0-701, the simplest move is to finish that path and sit the SY0-701 exam inside that window. Switching mid-study rarely saves time and usually costs momentum, since you would be trading progress you have already made for objectives you have not started yet. Either version earns you the same Security+ certification.

If you are just starting, compare your realistic study timeline to that six-month window. If you can be ready well before SY0-701 retires, either version works. If your plan stretches longer, SY0-801 is the better target.

Once you decide, pick a target test date early. A date on the calendar gives your study plan a real deadline, and a deadline is what turns good intentions into finished chapters.

What Is Not Changing

For anyone worried about starting over, the core fundamentals do not disappear. Symmetric and asymmetric cryptography, identification, authentication, and authorization, threat actors, and hardening weak configurations all carry forward as the foundation SY0-801 builds on. If you have already put study time into SY0-701, none of it is wasted.

Take symmetric encryption as one example. Once a secure connection is set up, the web traffic and encrypted Wi-Fi you use every day rely on the same idea: a shared key encrypts and decrypts the data. That is not exam trivia, it is how most secure traffic moves, and it will be just as central on SY0-801. The same goes for the identification, authentication, and authorization sequence behind every login, and for the hardening skills that catch an open guest account or a default Wi-Fi setting before it becomes an incident.

Threat actors and social engineering are another example. Phishing, pretexting, and impersonation were around long before SY0-701, and they will still be on the exam after it, because people remain the easiest way into most organizations. Learning to recognize those tactics is a skill you will use on day one of a security job, whichever exam version is printed on your certificate.

How to Study Through a Transition

Exam transitions reward a little extra care with your study materials. Before you rely on any guide, video, or question bank, check which exam code it was written for. Material written for SY0-701 is exactly right if SY0-701 is your target, and it remains a solid way to learn the shared fundamentals. If you are aiming for SY0-801, though, you want your final review built on the new objectives.

A simple habit helps here. Download the official exam objectives for the version you plan to take and keep them next to you while you study. Check off each objective as you cover it. That list keeps you focused on what the exam actually tests, and it makes the differences between the two versions easy to spot.

Practice exams matter more than usual during a transition. Working through questions written to the new objectives is the fastest way to see where SY0-801 asks things differently, and where your SY0-701 knowledge already has you covered.

How to Plan Your Next Few Months

The practical takeaway is simple. Keep studying the fundamentals, because they are not changing. Decide which version fits your timeline, using the six-month SY0-701 window as your guide. And if SY0-801 is your target, start with the shared fundamentals now, since that work counts on either version. If you are sticking with SY0-701, build your schedule backward from the end of the overlap window and leave yourself a cushion, so a rescheduled exam or a busy month at work does not push you past it.
