Tech careers get recommended constantly, and for good reason, but “get into tech” is easier said than done, mostly because tech is not one thing. It is at least six different things, each with its own daily work, its own entry point, and its own job market. Someone who thrives untangling a spreadsheet full of messy numbers wants a very different career than someone who is happiest ripping apart a misbehaving network switch. Both of them are “in tech.” Neither one is doing the other person’s job.

The short version: Data and cybersecurity careers currently show the strongest projected growth of the six fields covered here, data scientist roles are projected to grow 35 percent from 2025 to 2035 and information security analyst roles 21 percent, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Cloud and AI-adjacent roles are expanding as companies keep shifting infrastructure and workloads to the cloud, while traditional network administration and general tech support are flattening or declining slightly as automation absorbs routine tasks, even though tech support remains the easiest field to break into without a degree. Certifications are the fastest, most affordable way to prove real skill in any of these six paths.

Data Careers: Turning Raw Numbers Into Decisions

Data careers exist because companies collect far more information than any one person can make sense of by eye. A data analyst pulls that information together, cleans it up, and builds the reports and dashboards that let a manager actually answer a question like “why did sales drop last quarter.” A data engineer builds and maintains the pipelines that move that data from wherever it is created to wherever it needs to end up, reliably and on schedule. A data scientist goes a step further, building statistical models and machine learning systems that do not just describe what happened but predict what is likely to happen next. The day to day work leans heavily on SQL, spreadsheets, and at least one programming language, usually Python, along with a fair amount of communication, since a brilliant analysis nobody can explain to a non-technical stakeholder does not accomplish much. The path in typically starts with a data analyst role and a bachelor’s degree in a related field, though certificate programs and bootcamps have become a common entry route for career changers. The growth numbers here are hard to ignore. The Bureau of Labor Statistics projects data scientist employment to grow 35 percent between 2025 and 2035, with a median annual wage of $120,230 as of May 2025 and roughly 275,600 people already working in the role. That combination, high pay and high growth, is a big part of why data careers keep coming up as a starting point for people weighing a move into tech.

Artificial Intelligence Careers: Building and Governing the Systems Everyone Is Talking About

AI careers are less one job than a cluster of related ones. A machine learning engineer takes a model that works in a research notebook and turns it into something that runs reliably in production, at scale, without falling over. An AI research scientist works further upstream, developing the underlying models and algorithms in the first place, usually holding a master’s degree or PhD. Newer roles are showing up around AI governance and risk, auditing how a company’s AI systems are trained, deployed, and monitored so they don’t create legal or security problems nobody anticipated. None of this happens in isolation from the rest of software. Most AI engineers write a lot of ordinary code, work inside cloud environments, and rely on the same version control and testing practices as any other developer. What is different is the math underneath, linear algebra, probability, and statistics show up constantly, which is why a strong foundation in those areas matters more here than in most other tech paths. The Bureau of Labor Statistics groups a lot of this work under computer and information research scientists, projected to grow 22 percent from 2025 to 2035 with a median annual wage of $140,300, though that category is still fairly small at about 38,600 jobs nationally. Many AI engineers are counted instead as software developers, a much larger occupation projected to grow 10 percent over the same period with a median wage of $135,980. Either way, the demand for people who can actually ship working AI systems, not just talk about them, keeps climbing.

Networking Careers: Keeping Everything Connected

Networking is the plumbing of every other tech career on this list. A network administrator keeps an organization’s day to day network running, monitoring performance, managing user access, and fixing the outage that always seems to happen at the worst possible time. A network engineer designs and builds out the infrastructure in the first place, and a network architect plans how it should all fit together as a company grows, adds locations, or moves workloads to the cloud. This is also the one field on this list with a genuinely mixed growth picture, and it is worth saying plainly rather than glossing over. The Bureau of Labor Statistics projects network and computer systems administrator jobs to shrink slightly, about 4 percent, from 2025 to 2035, as routine administration work gets automated and consolidated. Even so, the agency still projects roughly 13,400 openings a year on average, mostly from people retiring or moving into other roles, on a base of 323,600 current jobs with a median wage of $99,130. Meanwhile, computer network architects, the more senior design-focused role, are projected to grow 8 percent over the same period, with a median wage of $134,050, largely because expanding cloud adoption means someone still has to design how a network connects to it. The lesson here is not that networking is dying, it is that the entry-level admin work is shrinking while the design and cloud-integration side of networking is growing.

Cloud Careers: Running Infrastructure Nobody Has to Touch

Cloud careers grew directly out of networking and systems administration as companies moved their servers out of their own buildings and into providers like AWS, Azure, and Google Cloud. A cloud administrator keeps those environments running day to day, managing accounts, storage, and uptime. A cloud engineer builds out the infrastructure itself, often using code to automate the setup instead of clicking through a console by hand. A cloud architect designs how all of it fits together at a company-wide level, balancing cost, performance, and security. Because cloud computing is a delivery model rather than a single job classification, there is no dedicated Bureau of Labor Statistics category for it the way there is for network administrators or data scientists. The clearest signal instead shows up inside adjacent occupations. The Bureau’s own writeup on computer network architects, projected to grow 8 percent from 2025 to 2035 with a median wage of $134,050, specifically calls out “continued expansion of cloud computing” as a driver of demand for that role. In practice, cloud skills have become close to a baseline expectation across networking, systems administration, and software roles rather than a separate track, which is exactly why employers keep listing cloud certifications alongside traditional IT ones. Getting in usually starts from an adjacent role, systems administration, networking, or software development, plus a vendor certification from AWS, Microsoft Azure, or Google Cloud that proves hands-on ability with a specific platform.

Cybersecurity Careers: Defending What Everyone Else Built

Cybersecurity careers exist to protect everything the other five fields on this list build. An information security analyst monitors an organization’s systems for intrusions, investigates alerts, and puts up the defenses, firewalls, access controls, encryption, that keep attackers out in the first place. A security operations center, or SOC, analyst does a lot of that monitoring work in real time as part of a team, while more senior security engineers design the systems those analysts rely on. Beyond the purely technical side, governance, risk, and compliance roles focus on whether a company’s security practices actually satisfy the regulations and standards it is supposed to follow. Cybersecurity is unusual among these six fields in how accessible its entry point is relative to its pay. A strong Security+ style foundation, paired with genuine curiosity about how systems get broken into, can carry someone a long way before a four-year degree becomes strictly necessary, though many employers still prefer one. The numbers back up the field’s reputation as one of tech’s steadiest bets. The Bureau of Labor Statistics projects information security analyst employment to grow 21 percent from 2025 to 2035, adding roughly 14,100 openings a year on a base of 192,900 current jobs, with a median annual wage of $129,180. That is a rare combination of strong current pay, strong growth, and a genuinely accessible entry path.

Tech Support Careers: The Front Door Into IT

Tech support is where a lot of IT careers begin, and there is no shame in that, plenty of people who now hold senior engineering or security titles started out answering the phone when someone’s laptop would not turn on. A help desk or user support specialist handles the day to day questions and problems that come from employees or customers, walking someone through a password reset or a printer that will not connect. A desktop support specialist handles more hands-on hardware and software troubleshooting in person. A network support specialist sits a level up, handling the more technical infrastructure-side issues that a general help desk agent would escalate. This is also the field where certifications matter most relative to a degree. A high school diploma paired with a recognized certification is often enough to get a foot in the door, which is exactly why it functions as tech’s most common entry ramp. The employment picture here is large but essentially flat. The Bureau of Labor Statistics groups this work under computer support specialists, a category of 903,100 jobs projected to decline about 3 percent from 2025 to 2035 as routine issues get automated or resolved through self-service tools. The category splits into two tiers worth knowing about separately, network support specialists, a smaller group of 152,500 jobs with a median wage of $76,220, and user support specialists, the larger group of 750,600 jobs with a median wage of $61,860. The sheer size of the field means it keeps generating openings even as its growth rate cools, and it remains the single easiest field on this list to break into without prior experience.

Which of These Tech Careers Fits You Best?

None of these six tech careers is objectively “the best” one to get into. The honest answer depends on what kind of problems you like solving. If you like finding patterns in messy information, data is worth a look. If you like building systems that improve themselves, AI is calling. If you like keeping complex systems connected and running, networking and cloud both reward that instinct, one focused on the wiring and design, the other on infrastructure that lives somewhere else entirely. If you like thinking like an attacker to stop one, cybersecurity fits. And if you like helping people directly and want the fastest way into a paycheck in tech, support roles are still the most open door in the industry.
