What the Network+ is (and why it’s worth earning)
The CompTIA Network+ certifies that you can design, configure, manage, and troubleshoot networks — the skills behind job titles like network technician, network administrator, help desk escalation, and junior network engineer. Where the A+ says “I can support the machine,” Network+ says “I can support the network the machine lives on.” Since almost nothing in IT runs without a network anymore, that’s a claim employers pay attention to.

CompTIA publishes exactly how much of the exam each domain carries, so you can budget your study hours instead of guessing:

Look at the top row: troubleshooting is the single biggest domain. That tells you what this exam really is — not a vocabulary test, but a “something’s broken, what’s your next move?” test. Here’s what each domain actually asks:
- Networking concepts (23%) — the foundation everything else stands on: the OSI model, network appliances and their functions, cloud concepts and connectivity, ports and protocols, traffic types, transmission media, network topologies, and IPv4 addressing including subnetting. - Network implementation (20%) — putting networks together: routing technologies and static vs. dynamic routing, switching (VLANs, trunking, interface configuration), wireless standards and installation, and the physical side — racks, cabling, and installation factors.
- Network operations (19%) — keeping networks healthy: documentation, monitoring, SNMP and logging, backup and disaster-recovery concepts, DHCP, DNS, and NTP as services you administer (not just acronyms you define), and remote access methods.

One caution that applies to every CompTIA exam: the percentages tell you how the questions are distributed, not which topics you’re allowed to skip. A 14% domain can still sink you if you write it off.
What’s new in N10-009
If you studied networking a few years back — or you’re using an old N10-008 book someone handed you — know that N10-009 builds on the same foundation but pulls the exam toward how networks are actually built today. The additions worth knowing about:
- Cloud concepts and connectivity — network function virtualization (NFV), virtual private clouds (VPCs), and the connectivity options that link your network to the cloud: VPNs and direct connections.
- Modern security — network security groups and security lists, and Zero Trust Architecture (ZTA).
- Software-defined everything — software-defined networking, SD-WAN, and Secure Access Service Edge (SASE).
- Infrastructure as code — automation concepts like playbooks, templates, configuration drift, and compliance.
None of it changes the fundamentals — frames are still frames, subnets are still subnets. But if your study materials predate N10-009, these are the gaps, and they’re real exam content. Version-check anything you buy (ours included: the version is on every product page).
How long should you study?
Mike’s honest answer hasn’t changed in 30 years of teaching this: it depends on where you’re starting from. Coming off a fresh A+ with the networking domain still warm in your head, you’re partway there on day one. Coming in cold, the concepts domain alone — especially subnetting — deserves unhurried time. Any guide promising everyone the same “6 weeks to Network+” is selling a calendar, not a plan.
So use a readiness signal you can measure instead: you’re ready to schedule the exam when you’re consistently scoring 85% or higher on timed practice tests. Above it, book the exam and stop second-guessing.
One Network+-specific note: subnetting is a skill, not a fact. You can’t read your way to it. Mike’s course spends a full chapter working subnetting problems — classes, CIDR, masks, special addresses — precisely because the exam expects you to do the math under time pressure, and the only path there is reps. The six-step study plan
- Download the N10-009 exam objectives first. Free from CompTIA’s website. Every exam question traces back to that document — it’s the map; everything else is transportation.
- Pick your core learning source. Video, book, or both — see choosing your study materials below. Work domain by domain in the exam’s proportions: troubleshooting and concepts together are nearly half the test, so that’s where the hours go.
- Get your hands on a network. The PBQs ask you to do things — configure a SOHO router, work a VLAN, order the troubleshooting steps.
