Why Networking Skills Show Up in Every Advanced Certification

Back to school is not just for kids. Whether you have a house full of new backpacks and school supplies right now, or you are simply coming off a summer that flew by faster than expected, late August has a way of putting the same question in front of all of us: what are you doing next, and are you actually ready for it? For a lot of IT professionals, that question points straight at certifications, and specifically at where to start or where to go next.

The short version: Whether you are certifying or just learning IT, the Network+ teaches the OSI model, DNS, and IP addressing, the foundational knowledge that security and AI governance credentials all assume you already know. Building that foundation first makes every certification that comes after it easier to earn.

Why Network+ Underpins Every Certification That Comes After It

Ask ten instructors which certification skills quietly underwrites every other one, and Network+ comes up more often than you would expect. It is not the flashiest credential on the shelf, and employers do not always ask for it by name the way they ask for Security+. But almost everything built on top of it assumes you already have the knowledge, whether the next step is a security certification, a specialist role, or something as new as governing artificial intelligence.

The OSI Model: Your Mental Map for Troubleshooting

Start with the OSI model. It has been around for more than thirty years, and it is easy to treat as exam trivia, seven layers to memorize and forget the week after the test. In practice, it is the mental map you use every time you troubleshoot a network problem, tune a firewall rule, or figure out where a security control actually lives. Once you can picture data moving from the physical wire up through each layer to the application on your screen, you carry that picture into every certification that comes after this one, often without even noticing you are using it.

DNS: The Lookup You’re Expected to Already Understand

DNS works the same way. Type a web address into your browser and you never think about the translation happening behind the scenes, a plain-language name resolving into a numeric address a computer can actually use. That convenience is easy to take for granted until you are studying DNS spoofing in Security+ or hunting for suspicious lookups in CySA+. The concept does not get re-explained at that point. You are expected to already understand it, and the certification moves on.

IP Addressing: The Math That Saves You Time Later

IP addressing is the same story wearing different clothes. Four familiar numbers separated by dots stand in for thirty-two ones and zeros, broken into groups for humans to read and remember instead of a computer. That math, converting binary into something usable, resurfaces the moment you start subnetting a larger network or reading log files line by line in an advanced security course. Skip the foundation and every certification after it gets harder than it strictly needs to be.

ISACA introduced AAISM, Advanced in AI Security Management, built for auditors, risk officers, and security managers who need to govern and evaluate AI systems rather than just deploy them. It is a practitioner-level credential, not an entry-level one, aimed at people already working in audit, risk, or compliance who want to extend that expertise into AI. Organizations are rolling out AI faster than they are building the oversight to manage it, and boards are starting to ask questions their own audit teams cannot confidently answer yet.

Why Even a Governance Credential Needs Network Fundamentals

AAISM is a governance and risk credential, not a technical deep dive into how models are trained. But even governance work depends on understanding where AI systems actually sit on a network, how data reaches them, and what traffic in and out of them should normally look like. That understanding traces straight back to the same fundamentals Network+ teaches first, long before AI ever enters the conversation.

The Takeaway: Networking Knowledge Compounds

None of this is really about any single certification, and it is not really about the calendar either. It is about the fact that networking knowledge compounds over time. The OSI model you learn once becomes the framework you use to reason about a firewall years later. The DNS lookup you learn to trust becomes the thing you question when something looks off. The IP addressing math you practice until it is automatic becomes the shortcut that saves you time reading logs under pressure. Every advanced certification, all the way up to the newest ones focused on AI, assumes that foundation is already in place. Whether certify or are just learning to advance your career, late August is as good a time as any to start building it.
